The three primary colours in the Schmincke artists‘ colours assortments

Product information - Primary colours

We are often asked – not only by art teachers – about the “Primary Colours” within our colour ranges for an easy mixing of lots of individual and brilliant colours.

For some ranges, there is a very simple answer, as in nearly all our AKADEMIE® and College® assortments the primary colours are marked as follows:

  • Primary yellow or College yellow
  • Primary magenta or College magenta
  • Primary cyan or College cyan

In our Premium assortments, it is a little bit different. The colour names are often based on historical designations or on chemical compositions of the used pigments (e.g. phthalo blue) or it is a description of the colour, like e.g. ruby red.

Pict: Example for brilliant mixing results using the three primary colours, here HORADAM® watercolours Cadmium yellow light (14 224), Magenta (14 325) and Helio cerulean (14 479), mixing ratio 1.1 and 2.1.

Nevertheless, there are certain colours which are perfectly suited as primary colours for mixing. Please have a look at the following chart, where all primary colours of all assortments are indicated:

Oil colours
Acrylic colours
